Haiku-Pauwela, or Haiku, is a small town on the northern coast of Maui. Haiku is a charming town known for its world-class surfing beaches and artsy, low-key atmosphere. Haiku abounds with Hawaiian estate-style residences, unique estates, off-grid villas, and lush tropical foliage. People from all walks of life, including famous artists, surfers, and water sports athletes, call this community home. Large agricultural lots allow residents to have farm animals, including horses, sheep, goats, cows, chickens, pigs and more.
 

Haiku is situated on the edge of Maui’s tropical rainforest. You will see stunning rainbows daily, beautifully abundant scenery, green rolling hills, and sugar cane and pineapple fields. Haiku has gorgeous waterfalls and pools for locals and tourists to climb, explore, swim and play in, including the very popular Makapipi Falls and Twin Falls.

Local Lifestyle

Haiku is one of the best places to feel close to nature and live an active lifestyle. Maui’s north shore is one of the world’s best surfing spots. If you live in Haiku, you can enjoy windsurfing, surfing, tow surfing, or kitesurfing right in your own backyard. Ho’okipa Beach is possibly the world’s most famous windsurfing location, whereas Peahi (Jaws) is for experienced big wave surfers. If surfing is not your thing, it’s always pleasant to lay in the sand, snorkel, swim, and view sea turtles at Ho’okipa Beach, or head to Twin Falls for a day of hiking.

Lovers of all things Japanese cuisine converge at Nuka, a refined, modern eatery with an expansive menu of small plates, sushi combinations, and an assortment of beverages. Meanwhile, Colleen’s at the Cannery attracts guests with its organic, fresh New American fare served inside an authentic and restored pineapple cannery. Grab a sweet treat from Baked on Maui. This establishment is small in size but big in flavor. Here, you’ll enjoy various desserts, including pastries, cookies and coffee.
 

Located a short and easy walk from the ocean is an astonishing line of local food trucks located at Maliko Gulch. You’ll find numerous food trucks and stands serving various cuisines. One particular favorite is Rainbow Kitchen + Rebel Tonics, a bright yellow food truck selling some of the island’s best vegetarian breakfast and lunch plates.
 

Things to Do

Ho’okipa Beach Park is a haven for water recreation. This long stretch of picture-perfect shoreline and its strong wind paint a perfect backdrop for world-class windsurfing and kitesurfing. These thrilling water sports, along with surfing, are popular here.
 

Take the family to Giggle Hill, formally known as 4th Marine Division Memorial Park, to swing, slide, jump, and play at its massive playground, complete with covered awnings, slides, bridges, interactive features, and more.
 

One of the top attractions of Haiku is the spectacular Twin Falls. It is only a short walk to two waterfalls with tranquil swimming pools. At this natural attraction, you will encounter breathtaking waterfalls, verdant landscapes, vibrant vegetation, and stream crossings.
