Makena is located in South Maui and is adjacent to Wailea. Its greatness lies in the fact that, although seemingly isolated and awash in natural beauty, it is only a ten-minute drive from Wailea’s shopping, dining, and entertainment and a five-minute drive from Kihei’s conveniences. The beautiful coastline features both lava rock and sandy beaches. The sea is an unbelievable shade of blue, and the views of Molokini and Kaho’olawe are breathtaking. The verdant eastern slopes of Haleakala are also a sight to behold.
 

Makena is a popular holiday destination for the world’s elite. It’s no surprise that some of the world’s most famous business leaders, dignitaries, and celebrities have made Makena their “home away from home,” as it offers all the comforts of the neighboring Wailea Resort in a more peaceful and private environment. Along Makena’s stunning shoreline are some of the most desirable houses in Hawaii. Makena features only residential homes and three condo complexes, Makena Surf and Na Hale O’Makena. Makena Beach & Golf Club is a private residential community for Discovery members only.

Local Lifestyle – Living in Wailea

Makena features a relaxed and vacation-oriented lifestyle. Residents love snorkeling and diving at the Ahihi-Kinau Natural Area Reserve, also known as La Perouse Bay. The water at this reserve is in pristine condition compared to other areas. Another local favorite is Big Beach, perfect for water Boogie Boarding and sunbathing. One can hike across lava fields along Kings Trail. There are plenty of options for residents who love golfing in nearby communities, such as the Wailea Gold Course, Emerald Golf Course, and Wailea Blue Course.

The Shops at Wailea, located within the Wailea Resort, is the best place to shop and dine close to Makena. This shopping complex offers over 70 restaurants, galleries, and boutiques. Head to Honolua Surf Co., Canyon Beachwear, or Maui Clothing Company for all your vacation needs. Afterward, stop by Island Gourmet Markets for tasty treats. Those who want high-end apparel and accessories flock to Gucci, Louis Vuitton or Bottega Veneta.
 

While Makena isn’t home to notable restaurants, it is close to numerous top-rated eateries in nearby cities and neighborhoods. Humuhumunukunukuapua’a, located in the stunning Grand Wailea, is one of the most difficult-to-pronounce restaurants in Hawaii and one of the most popular. This restaurant is housed in a Polynesian building with a thatched roof and a million gallons of saltwater surrounding it. Ka’ana Kitchen at the Andaz is a popular spot for breakfast and dinner due to its plantation-style menu and open kitchen where diners can see the chefs at work. Delicate wagyu beef cheeks and abalone risotto are popular dinner entrees, while the kalua pig Benedict with ponzu hollandaise is a common brunch option.
 

Humble Market Kitchin at the Wailea Beach Resort features waterfront dining and scenic views. This restaurant’s menu is reminiscent of Chef Roy Yamaguchi’s family roots that started on the Maui plantations.
 

Other notable eateries include Nick’s Fishmarket at the Fairmont Kea Lani, Spago at the Four Seasons, The Restaurant at Hotel Wailea, Manoli’s Pizza Company, Monkeypod Kitchen by Merriman, and Ferraro’s Bar e Ristorante.
 

Things to Do in Wailea

Head to Makena State Park, where you can go fishing, swimming, or snorkeling. This state park has two beaches, Big Beach and Little Beach. Each beach is five minutes from the other and separated by Pu’u Olai. The sunsets here are breathtaking. Makena is mainly known for Makena State Park and its world-class water recreation. However, this stunning community is close to thrilling attractions in the nearby Wailea and Kihei areas.
 

La Perouse Bay in Kihei is home to stunning lava fields with striking colors and textural contrasts. The location is ideal for photography, hiking, snorkeling, and other outdoor pursuits due to its proximity to the beach and unobstructed views of the mountains beyond its lava fields. Makena Landing is the ideal boat and kayak launch site for the Makena and Wailea areas in South Maui. Because it remains remarkably shallow for a hundred yards or more, snorkeling and swimming are popular. There is always a good chance you will encounter sea turtles here.
